I walked up to the scene. Hawthorne had called me right when I was leaving the deli to tell me there was a dead body nearby. Beads of sweat skipped down the back of my neck, and I retrieved a napkin from my back pocket. Walking in eighty-degree weather for fifteen minutes wasn’t the smartest idea, but I needed the fresh air, and walking off my hardon seemed like the best choice. Flashing lights and yellow tape spanned the entire block. Two black SUVs blocked off traffic, and a group of patrol cops kept the nosey bystanders at bay. The humidity and scorching heat heightened the thick smell of dead flesh. It blanketed the stiff air, forcing my lips apart to breathe out of my mouth. I spotted Hawthorne standing at the side of the coroner's van as they lifted the covered body inside.

“Who called it in?” I asked him as I stared down the dimly lit alley in front of us.

“A few homeless guys. I told them to stick around.”

I approached the alley, stepping on broken glass scattered throughout the small space. Empty crates with worn-out duffels and dirty blankets lined the brick walls on either side as I stepped deeper inside. The whispering conversation between them ended as I approached, and their bulging eyes met mine. I made the mistake of drawing in a breath, and bile bubbled in my gut from the mocktail of vomit and rotting flesh suffocating me.

A scratchy cough pushed past the lips of a colorless, decrepit man to my left.

A man to my right stood, showing off his tattered shirt and oversized jeans that barely clung to his body. “Maybe. Maybe not,” he said as he lifted a brow.

“How much?” I asked as I fished for my wallet.

“Two hundred.”

I stifled a painful laugh at his response and pulled a few bills out of my wallet. He inched closer, the sour stench radiating off his body melting with the other foul smells that surrounded me.

“That’s just highway robbery. I can do forty if you give me something to work with.”

“Fifty,” the man spat.

The rest of them nodded, shifting against the wall as they became more invested in the exchange by the minute.

“Forty-five. Take it or I’ll have your shit wiped out of here faster than you can snatch the money from my fingers.”

He looked at me with a fixed look of concentration, his chin rising and falling as he contemplated the deal. I stood back, widening my stance as I folded my arms across my chest. Their belongings amounted to nothing, just bags of old clothes and random trinkets they had picked up through
